***CLICK THE "SEE OTHER ITEMS" LINK TO SEE MY OTHER VINTAGE OFFERINGS***Okay, I've just dropped the price on this killer classic first appeared in the '62 National catalog. The Res-O-Glas color is listed as Scarlet, and if you ask me, it is! The Val-Pro 82, was the simplest of all the new map-shaped guitars, featuring a floating bridge, shark fin fretboard inlays, engraved pick guard, Kluson "butterfly" tuners, and one Ralph Keller-designed single pickup.
Guitarists marvel that the pickup looks like a humbucker, but is actually a fat-sounding single coil. Well, the famed Keller pickup was on the market in Valco guitars for several years before the familiar Seth Lover humbucker appeared in '57, so the truth is, the humbucker kinda looks like a single coil. Take that, Kalamazoo.
The three-way switch selects between different tone presets, each of which has its own volume pot. There's also a master volume pot for when you have your levels where you want 'em. For me, everything was always "wide open." Nevertheless, all pots work well with minimal scratchiness.
A check in the Gruhn's Guide reveals this was built in Chicago in late '61. To my knowledge, everything on this guitar is as it was when it left the factory? which means you're going to want to put a sting ground on it, to eliminate hum.
As you can see in the photo, the neck binding has the typical Valco cracking that was a result of the material used that was prone to shrinkage. That said, the binding has been stable the twelve or so years I've owned this guitar. I bought it years ago at a guitar show. I've always loved the big lower bout this guitar has, as I usually play a 335.
Considering the age, I'd say this guitar is in pretty good condition -- and it comes with an original case! Let's give it a listen.
